New Zealand Alpine Climbing Grades

The NZ alpine grading system works on a 1 through possible 7 scale, with 1 being the easiest. It also uses "+" and "–" to further refine the system.

The scale is not just a measure of technical difficulty. It attempts to include objective hazard, access, and route length. Always bear in mind that these grades are a general indication. The Southern Alps have a temperate maritime climate, and conditions can change rapidly, even over the space of a day.
