Murray Ball: IFMGA Guide
Nationality: NZ
First worked with Alpine Guides: 1980
Not to be confused with the NZ cartoonist of the same name, Wanaka-based guide Murray's climbing history and achievements aren't possible to document in such a small space. The man himself is as humble about his abilities, as his hairstyle is unconventional...
Murray started his outdoor career as a 12 year old tramper on the North Island volcanoes. He started training as a guide in 1977, and began working with Alpine Guides in 1980. In 1985 he left for Europe, where he lived mostly in France, before returning to NZ in 1998.
During his European guiding tour, Murray made ascents right around the continent, as far afield as the Czech Republic.
On his days off, Murray has been putting in new routes around Wanaka and Fiordland. A fervent rock climber, his overseas rock resume extends through Corsica, Thailand, Portugal, Australia, the UK and the USA.
No slouch on skis Murray was an early champion of the free riding skiing movement, and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Glen Plake and Scott Schmidt.
Ever inventive, Murray's climbing gear is not to be found in the latest catalogues. Well worn and customised beyond recognition is the norm for his kit. Why spend good money on fancy anti-ball plates when you can make your own from plastic milk bottles?
