Women's Mountaineering Course (WMC)

The WMC is Alpine Guides' female-only mountain climbing course, based at Mt Cook New Zealand. A Technical Mountaineering Course (TMC) - with testosterone removed.

The WMC is the female mountaineers complete introduction to climbing, and traveling in the high alpine environment.

Women's Mountaineering Courses are run by NZ's leading female mountain guides. You will learn the latest and safest alpine climbing techniques.

Climb peaks with "hands on" experience

This course is "hands on". You will climb peaks, and learn on the mountain. Every day will build on what you learn, extending your skill-set while climbing.

At the end of the course you should be able to climb moderate technical peaks independently, safely, and confidently.

Instruction topics include:

  • Glacier travel and crevasse rescue
  • Snow and ice climbing
  • Belay systems and techniques
  • Modern rope techniques
  • Route finding
  • Emergency shelters
  • Mountain navigation, weather and forecasting
  • Avalanche hazard evaluation

Experience required:

  • High level of fitness
  • Basic rope skills (e.g. rock climbing, caving, abseiling)
  • Trekking/backpacking experience
