How do I get to Mt Cook?

See the Public Transport to Mt Cook page in the Pre-Trip Info section of the site.

Why use aircraft access?

There are no cable cars (téléférique) to alpine huts in New Zealand. Approaches on foot from road ends are generally long - and often very rugged.

Walking in to our base huts can use up 2 full days of your trip. Flying in saves time, allows us to carry in great food, and most importantly maximises your chances to do some climbing.

Do I need Insurance for climbing?

Your choice, but this needs to be arranged before you leave home. Please read our information on travel insurance for your Alpine Guides trip ›

Why do you recommend 55-65 Litre backpacks?

In order to carry all your gear, and share of food for a multi-day trip (even with air access) you need a large pack.

Expedition-sized packs are overkill, but most people cannot pack all their kit into a 45 litre backpack. 55-65 litres works in most situations. Read more about backpacks and what you will carry on your trip.

Will my boots be suitable?

Tipping - what is acceptable?

Tipping for service in NZ is not obligatory, or expected. If you choose to tip your guide it should be in recognition for superior service.
