It takes more than guides to make a guiding company keep ticking along. Here are some of the 'support' people who you'll likely encounter

Bryan Carter - Managing Director - IFMGA Guide

Bryan Carter
Years of toiling under heavy packs - and subsequent knee injuries - have led Bryan to taking a step back from active guiding. He has managed Alpine Guides since 1983 and (with Kevin Boekholt) took over ownership of this guiding icon in 2000.

Bryan began his guiding career at a mere 18 years old, and spent most of his career in the Southern Alps. His climbing forays have included first ascents such as the Strauchon Face of Dilemma, first solo ascents (West face of Haidinger), and notable climbs such as the 2nd winter ascent of the Caroline Face of Mount Cook. He has worked throughout the NZ mountains and in Antarctica and has traveled extensively overseas.

Part of the renaissance of New Zealand guiding in the 1970's, Bryan was among the first group of NZ guides to acquire IFMGA status. As he became involved with the management of Alpine Guides, he was responsible for the development of best practice guiding standards and professionalism as NZ guiding developed an international reputation.

Cory Green - Op's Assistant

Cory Green

Being multi-talented means that Cory is our do anything and everything guy. One of his main tasks is the endless(sometimes thankless) job of maintaining and keeping order of the hundreds of items that make up our climbing rental gear.

However, give him the slightest excuse to skive off work he will be in the mountains clocking up crampon mileage towards his goal of becoming a mountain guide.

Originally from Taranaki, Cory grew up in Western Australia where he worked part and full time for 8 years as an outdoor instructor. However, he's been more or less permanently in NZ for the last 5 years.

In his' spar'e time Cory is also a member of the St John's volunteer ambulance service, and the Mt Cook Search and Rescue team.

Arthur McBride - Op's Manager

Arthur McBride - self portrait

Arthur first came to Mt Cook in 1989 after completing a bachelor degree in Zoology. Initial hopes to work for the Department of Conservation were sidetracked into hotel management and immunohaematology. There followed some years in the wilderness of corporate hospitality around NZ before escape back to Mt Cook and gainful employment with Alpine Guides in late '95.

Arthur's position as Op's guy includes managing AGL's websites, retail store, program information, brochure distribution, advertising, day to day operations, computer bugs, coffee making, and chocolate bar quality control.

Being lucky enough live and work in one of the worlds best alpine playgrounds means that he isn't entirely office-bound. He's climbed Mt Cook & Mt Aspiring (amongst others), and gets to go tramping and bashing around the hills on one or two alpine trips every summer.
