Expedition Leader

We need a South American expert to join our guiding team in a full time as Expedition Leader, position starting this NZ spring.

The Expedition Leader is a key role; developing, running and guiding Alpine Guides expeditions to Bolivia, Argentina, and further afield. You will also be training and mentoring other guides to lead future expeditions.

The role requires guiding full-time in New Zealand supporting Alpine Guides' course and expedition program and assisting in glacier guiding and other mountain guiding activities, equating to year-round employment.

Key tasks:

  • Development and refinement of our South American programs

  • Ongoing administration, planning, coordinating and assisting with guest enquiries

  • Liaising with South American supporting operators (relationship building essential)

  • Lead-guiding these expeditions

Our guide requires:

  • Full IFMGA/UIAGM guide certification (you must be an IFMGA/UIAGM qualified guide).

  • At least 5 seasons experience guiding in South America, preferably as an expedition organiser/leader.

  • Fluent in Spanish and English - both spoken and written skills.

  • Proven contacts within the mountain guiding community in Argentina and Bolivia

  • Prior experience of at least one full summer season guiding in NZ.

  • Able to live in Mt Cook or Twizel full-time.

  • Able to commit to at least 3 or 4 years in this role.

  • Impeccable references.

  • The legal right to work in NZ. Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa.

Mountain Guides

Alpine Guides is inviting applications from qualified IFMGA or IFMGA/NZMGA Climbing Guides for full-time seasonal work for summer 2019-20.

Our main season is from November 2019 to late Feb/March 2020. Work start/finish dates can be flexible, around personal circumstances and the level of bookings.

You must be legally able to work in NZ, or willing to go through a Work Visa Application process (which may take several weeks to process). 

Alpine Guides provides a supportive and inclusive working environment, with a focus on mentorship and guide development.

Work will be varied, from straight-forward overnight trips to multi-day technical ascents of up to NZ Alpine grade 3+. You need a proven record to work independently and also the ability to coordinate and run instruction courses and supervise/mentor junior guides.

If required, accommodation assistance is available in Twizel, the closest town to Mt Cook Village.

You must be a current financial member of a guides association. and a current first aid holder equivalent or better than Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) level.

Non-NZ or Australian citizens will need to apply well in advance, as there is a Visa application process that may take several months.
