Glacier Guides Required

Alpine Guides is interested in hearing from NZMGA qualified Hard Ice Guides (Level 2) for the upcoming summer season 2018-19.

Guides will be running heli-hiking on the Tasman Glacier, with the opportunity for longer trips and Ice Climbing. 

Applicants will have current NZMGA HIG qualification, PHEC and experience working with helicopters is preferred. AGL is a small team, so the applicant will be self-motivated and able to work independently.  NZ Residency or a valid work visa is mandatory.

AGL offers competitive remuneration based on experience and promises a friendly work environment in a close team alongside IFMGA Guides. Accommodation is available in Mount Cook or Twizel.

Mountain Guides Required

Alpine Guides is inviting applications from qualified IFMGA or IFMGA/NZMGA Climbing Guides for full-time seasonal work for summer 2019-20.

Our main season is from November 2019 to late Feb/March 2020. Work start/finish dates can be flexible, around personal circumstances and the level of bookings.

You must be legally able to work in NZ, or willing to go through a Work Visa Application process (which may take several weeks to process). 

Alpine Guides provides a supportive and inclusive working environment, with a focus on mentorship and guide development.

Work will be varied, from straight-forward overnight trips to multi-day technical ascents of up to NZ Alpine grade 3+. You need a proven record to work independently and also the ability to coordinate and run instruction courses and supervise/mentor junior guides.

If required, accommodation assistance is available either at Aoraki Mount Cook or Twizel.

You must be a current financial member of a guides association. and a current first aid holder equivalent or better than Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) level.

Non-NZ or Australian citizens will need to apply well in advance, as there is a Visa application process that can take several months.

Expedition Leader

Alpine Guides is seeking a South American expert to join our guiding team in a full time position, starting this NZ summer (late October). The Expedition Leader is a specialised role and will be play a significant part in the development of Alpine Guides expeditions to Argentina, Bolivia, and further afield.

Key tasks:

  • Further development of our South American guiding programs - new trip concepts and opportunities

  • Administration, planning and product development, in conjunction with our marketing staff

  • Assistance with guest enquiries

  • Liaising with South American supporting operators - building strong relationships

  • Lead-guiding of these expeditions

  • Training assistant guides

The role will also involve mountain guiding in New Zealand in Alpine Guides' course and guiding program and assisting in glacier guiding and other activities, for year-round employment.

Our Expedition Leader requires: 

  • Full IFMGA/UIAGM guide certification

  • At least 5 seasons experience guiding in South America, preferably as an expedition organiser/leader

  • Fluent in Spanish and English - both spoken and written skills

  • Proven contacts within the mountain guiding community in Argentina and Bolivia

  • Prior experience of at least one full summer season guiding in NZ

  • Able to live in Mt Cook or Twizel full-time

  • Able to commit to at least 3 or 4 years in this role

  • Impeccable references

  • The legal right to work in NZ
