Mount Cook's Sebastopol Bluffs rock climbing area is located only 3 km from Alpine Guides’ base. With unbeatable views and reliable red greywacke, it is the perfect venue to learn rock climbing, develop your multi-pitch rock skills, or begin your trad rock climbing adventures.

Alpine Guides rock climbing trips run every fine day, from mid-October through April. We need advance bookings to ensure we have a guide available. All our guides are NZMGA/IFMGA or NZOIA Rock-qualified professionals. All the gear is provided and also lunch for full-day trips.

All rock climbing trips are weather dependent. A full refund is provided if we can’t operate due to bad weather. Please read through our Terms and Conditions, so you understand our cancellation policy.

Half-day Rock Climbs

  • 1 person - $575

  • 2 people - $350 per person

Includes: 

  • Free use of all technical gear (ropes, harnesses, helmets, shoes, karabiners, etc.)

All full day trips start at 08:30 AM , half-day trips start at 08:30 AM or 1:00 PM

Check-in at Alpine Guides office in Mount Cook Village.

Full-Day Rock Climbs

  • 1 person $895

  • 2 people, $550 per person

  • 3 people, $390 per person

Packing List

Please Bring

  • A small backpack (about 20 litres) for your personal items

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm (we recommend 50 SPF)

  • Water bottle - at least 1.0 L

  • Comfortable clothing: whenever possible choose lightweight quick-drying fabrics designed for outdoor activities

  • Warm layers: mountain weather can be unpredictable, even in summer

  • Bring your own rock shoes if you own a pair

We provide rock shoes, harnesses, ropes, personal protection items, and any other technical equipment needed.

red Arête half-day climbing

The classic Sebastopol Bluffs climb, Red Arête, is perfect for a quick half-day guided climb and ideal for people new to rock. Its’ 3 slabby sport pitches are great for developing technique and confidence.

  • Times: daily at 08:30 to 12:00, or 13:00 to 16:30

  • 3 pitches, 2 abseils.

  • Grade: Ewbank 13

  • Maximum guide/participant ratio 1:2

intro to rock climbing - full day

Learn all the basics on this full-day rock climbing experience. You’ll receive an intro to knots, instruction on belaying, top roping, leading tips, anchor cleaning and much more. No experience is necessary, just basic fitness.

  • Times: 08:30 to 16:00

  • Maximum guide/participant ratio 1:4

intro to multi-pitch rock - full day

Learn to lead multi-pitch climbs, manage your stances and abseils. Ideal for those already leading grade 13-14 sports routes.

  • Time: 08:30 to 16:00

  • Maximum guide/participant ratio 1:4

trad climbing clinic - full day

A full-day course for the more experienced climber who wants to learn to use traditional anchors. We start off working on natural pro and work up to leading some routes. Minimum experience - you should be leading Ewbank 16-17 sport routes.

  • Time: 08:30 to 16:00

  • Maximum guide/participant ratio 1:4

Booking Conditions

These reservation and cancelation conditions are specifically for rock climbing. It is assumed you have read and accepted these conditions when booking. Your booking form is a legally binding document.

  • The following conditions apply to all single-day Rock Climbing trips. Please read thoroughly.

    1. Online bookings will be confirmed on receipt of a 25% non-refundable deposit per person, and a completed booking form/waiver. Full payment is due on the day of the activity.

    2. Bookings for Rock Climbing must be made for specific dates.

    3. Alpine Guides reserves the right to modify itineraries if necessary, due to circumstances beyond our control including changing weather, or guest ability/fitness.

  • 1. Rock climbing is weather-dependent. We will make a final decision on the morning of your trip (by 08:00) and will notify you if we cannot operate due to the weather. We may offer you an alternate date, if suitable, or a full refund of the deposit. We encourage guests to contact us 48 hours out to check on the weather.

    2. No refunds are due for leaving during the trip for medical or fitness reasons. We recommend travel insurance to cover this contingency.

  • All deposits are non-refundable, except when the trip is canceled due to weather conditions.

    There is no charge for reducing guest numbers where the price is based on a fixed rate per person.
